Montana Plan update

The Montana Supreme Court has stopped the Montana Plan. But the folks behind Transparent Election Initiative have submitted a revised proposal that honors the court’s ruling and simplifies the motion.

On Tuesday January 6th the Montana Supreme Court voted unanimously to reject The Montana Plan, saying that it violated a state constitutional provision that prohibits more than one subject from being put to voters in a single question.

The folks behind the Montana Plan have filed a new proposal. Here's what Montana Plan leader Jeff Mangan said:

“Montana has a citizens’ initiative process that we can all be proud of, one that allows Montanans to roll up their sleeves to enact positive change for the betterment of family, friends, and neighbors.  I hear from Montanans every day how much corporate and dark money is damaging our political process. It is a privilege to work on a matter that is so important, and that is exactly what we will continue to do,” Mangan told the Daily Montanan on Tuesday. “We appreciate and respect the work of the court. We are grateful for the guidance and understand what the court is saying. We will re-file by the end of this week. Now, I need to get back to work!”

Transparent Election Initiative files new plan to stop corporations from political spending • Daily Montanan
The Transparent Election Initiative in Montana has resubmitted paperwork to the state to get a proposal to curb corporate spending in politics on the ballot before the June 19 deadline.

Sounds to me like Jeff expected this and was ready for it. I've contacted Jeff for comment, but surely he's busy. If I hear back from him I'll update the post.
