At today's Fighting Oligarchy tour stop in Viroqua, WI, Bernie talked about 4 items on the Town Hall Citizen Economic Bill Of Rights.

He talked about the importance of Medicare for All, publicly funded elections, a good paying job and good education, and social security – economic protection during old age.

In the segment when Bernie talked about social security, he said "scrap the cap". I'd never heard "scrap the cap" before. Is it a new phrase Bernie coined? It's great!

The reason why social security benefits can't be increased or why it's possibly insolvent is that the tax is capped at $175k of income per year. Meaning, you pay social security tax on all income up to $175k/year. Then zero social security tax on all income of greater than $175k/year. Someone who makes $10 million a year of income pays the same amount of social security tax as someone who makes $175k of income. It's wrong.

If we "scrap the cap" as Bernie said – removed the cap on social security tax – billions, maybe trillions more dollars would go in the social security fund. Social security would not only be funded for lifetimes, social security benefits could be increased. Same goes if we just raised the cap to $10m of income.

Scrap the cap is brilliant. Every Democrat should run on this.
